theamazingphenoiger asked: But I thought the whole stereotype was that MEN don't listen, so shouldn't the pink earplugs be for the men and the EXTREME ones for the women? You know, because we're supposed to be such better listeners? I don't know this joke is not very funny.

Yes, men don’t need help with the not listening - and if they wear the pink ones, it blocks out the women in their lives when they talk about things that aren’t sports related.

ear plugs

I can assure people that women snore loudly too and I assume it’s annoying no matter what your gender is

notseriousenough asked: OMG, so I was buying earplugs the other day. They have regular, normal earplugs that are that weird beige color. Then there were bright pink earplugs for the lady folks. They block out snoring from the men folks and look! A picture of a butterfly! Then there were, I'm not even joking, "extreme" earplugs. For men. They were blue. And extreme. And I almost lost my shit in Target, because what the fuck.

Not surprising.

Anonymous asked: there was this one ad for the phones or something? and the mom and daughter were crying uncontrollably and it always annoyed me for some reason! thoughts?

Oh yes, I can picture it, though I don’t remember the brand (AT&T? Sprint?) which says that commercial didn’t do its job very well.

The mom is freaking out over her daughter moving out, even though she’s only moving to the other side of town. It is annoying, especially when we see that car ad with the dad who can’t let his baby girl grow up - he’s not sobbing, he’s talking normally, he’s just seeing her as a 5 year old.

But when a mom is worried about her child, she’s hysterical. You know, that came up in an episode of Leave it to Beaver yesterday - June wasn’t crying, but she was like, “Who is this Frances? What is she doing talking about my Wally?” while Ward was cool. That was 50 years ago.

The ad is playing with those same stereotypes and cliches.

and yes it is annoying - somebody crying and shrieking makes me hate the ad, why would you do that?

Anonymous asked: What do you think about the Dr. Pepper for men commercial?

I loathe it.

The product is sexist and the commercials are horrible. The latest is about men’s spaces, “what are we doing in the shed, you ask?”

I have to mow the yard tonight. I am a woman. And that exclusionary gender roles shit reminds me of my dad, who was a cheater and not a good husband or father - we were only allowed in his rooms with permission and supervision. Even my mom wasn’t supposed to go in there.

It’s not healthy for humans outside commercials.

Anonymous asked: Have you seen that Kotex commercial where the woman was bashing(well, not quite that harsh maybe) other pad/tampon commercials, telling them to 'get real'? Personally this anon loves it.

Yup!

carolinesavictim asked: Hi- love this blog, and as I was going through today I saw the word "MRA". What does that stand for?

Men’s Rights Activists

Pretty much misogynist - fighting for rights men already have.

frostrune asked: i cannot believe that someone really just came in to play "what about the men" here

Well I’m feeling ~generous on a Saturday morning.

Perhaps they read that recent Cracked article? I didn’t, because I knew it wouldn’t go in depth - if men aren’t allowed to be “girly”, what does that say about women? And fuck gender roles, honestly.

Anonymous asked: pfft 'sexist to men'. I often wonder, do these people believe that all the ads that are 'sexist to men' (or portray men in a way some people don't like) are made by an all-female ad agency hell-bent on destroying men through adverts for cleaning products and yogurt? These adverts are made, mostly, by men; they are made by the same people who make the actually sexist adverts -- they are not two opposing 'battle of the sexes' camps!

Yes exactly.

Remember a recent(ish - post 2000) episode of the Simpsons where Marge and Moe are business partners and she has to go out of town, and Homer says, “I’m jerkass Homer, does Maggie go in the dishwasher?”

A man being praised for running the dishwasher (I can’t get over that) and playing with his kids is part of our sexist society - as long as men are not expected to be capable with large appliances (but I trust him with my mower?! yeah right) and their own children, women are required to be.

Nobody outside my family thinks my dad is a bad person because his only role was discipline when my parents were together, because my mom was the primary parent.

The yogurt ads? Oh it’s okay that he can’t read what’s in front of him (thinking of the fridge ad), he doesn’t have to know what’s going on in his wife’s life.

clubthecute asked: Do you think the same way about ads sexist to men?

That they’re bad? Yep.

Is there some grand conspiracy by the world to mock men and hold them back? Nope.

Does the sexism in these “doofy dad” and “man child” ads reinforce the patriarchy? Yep. Take the doofy dad one - men can’t take care of children, they can’t use the damn dishwasher, playing into gender stereotypes and saying women are the ones who have to take care of the house and kids. It’s like how MRAs claim it’s sexism perpetrated by women when mothers get custody more often - it’s based on the sexist idea that women are naturally better mothers - it’s not good for anybody.
